Why I Love Bohemian...

My father is Arab, from Libya and my mother is Maltese from Zurrieq. I lived the first six years of my life in Libya, surrounded by a huge family and a myriad of cousins. Childhood in Libya is amazing. I played outside freely and have memories of verdant fields, billowing sand dunes, exotic fragrances, kohled eyes, and colorful, silky veils. It was magical and mystical and left a great impression on me. Growing up in Malta I feel totally Maltese but as I grew older I felt the need to revisit and honor my Arab heritage. I started experimenting with clothes. I believe that clothing oneself is a language in itself. It speaks of our mood, flair and confidence, creativity, and even emotions. We communicate so much without language. So how about honing this skill? I started thinking about what I like and admire. I like the exotic and the mystical. I like long flowy fabrics, Grecian costumes, roman sandals, tribal patterns, Indian saris, and Japanese kimonos. I like clothes that speak of the people who designed them. Clothes that have been inspired and thought through, which have little expressive details like a peculiarly shaped button. I like clothes that speak distinctly of women, like my aunts in Libya and their flowing silky veils. For me, clothes are not just a pretty fabric designed to show off curves and cover the rest. Rather they do the opposite. Clothes unveil what lies in our soul. What our soul yearns to express about our true nature and what we long to say about our hopes, dreams, and secret desires. It is about recreating ourselves every day in the process of becoming the woman we have grown to know and nurture inside and who can't wait to come out and play.
This is bohemian for me and Safia encapsulates all this to me. Creative designs with distinct oriental or ethnic touches and natural clean fabrics that honor the planet we walk on, as women.
